Practical steps to get more direct bookings for a small hotel
Direct bookings save commission and give you a relationship with the guest. You do not need a marketing budget to win more of them, but you do need a few basics in place.

Start with the guests who already know you
The easiest direct booking comes from someone who has stayed with you before or has already found you. Many guests look for a property on an OTA and then search its name on Google or Instagram. If they find a clear booking page with live prices, a share of them books direct. If they find only a phone number or an old website, they go back to the OTA.
So before thinking about advertising, make sure every place where people find you leads to a working booking page.
Check this yourself once a month. Search your property name on Google, open your Instagram profile and your Google Business Profile, and follow every link as if you were a guest on a phone. Note where you end up, how many taps it takes to see a price, and whether that price matches what the OTAs show. Broken or outdated links are one of the most common reasons guests give up and book through an OTA instead.

Seven steps that work
- Get a booking page with live availability. Guests should see real prices and book in a few clicks, on their phone, in their own language. A link in your Instagram bio and on your website is enough to start.
- Update your Google Business Profile. Add good photos, your website link, your WhatsApp number and correct details. Many guests check it before booking, and a working website link sends them to you instead of an OTA.
- Answer WhatsApp fast and send a link. When a guest asks about availability, reply with the price and a direct booking link. Quick, friendly replies win bookings that would otherwise go elsewhere.
- Keep guest profiles. Store contact details and past stays so you can recognise returning guests and greet them properly.
- Invite past guests back. A short, personal message before the next season, with a reason to book direct, works better than a newsletter.
- Give direct guests something extra. Breakfast, a late check-out or a pickup make booking direct worthwhile without lowering the room price below your OTA rate.
- Ask for a deposit. A deposit on direct bookings reduces no-shows and makes guests commit, just as OTA prepayment does.
Make booking direct as easy as an OTA
OTAs win because they are easy and trusted. Your booking page has to match that: clear photos, prices in a familiar currency, the total including tax and service charge, a cancellation policy in plain words and a confirmation by email straight after booking.
Languages help too. Bali attracts guests from Australia, Europe and Indonesia itself. A page in English, Indonesian, German or Dutch feels more trustworthy to those guests than an English-only form.
Finally, keep your direct availability honest. If your booking page shows a room as available while it is already sold on an OTA, you lose trust immediately. The booking page, the OTAs and your calendar should always show the same availability, which is why a booking page connected to your channel manager works better than a separate booking form.
Deposits without hassle
Many small properties still ask for a bank transfer, which slows down the booking and loses guests who do not want to wait. Taking a card deposit at the moment of booking is simpler for everyone. Sojodesk's booking page has no commission on direct bookings and can take an optional deposit through the hotel's own Stripe account, so the money goes straight to you.
Keep the deposit reasonable. Many properties use a split such as 30% at booking and the rest on arrival, which is enough to secure the booking without scaring off guests.
Questions about direct bookings
Can I offer a lower price on my own website?
Check your OTA agreements first, as some include rate parity rules. Adding value, like breakfast or a late check-out, is a safe alternative to a lower price.
How many direct bookings can a small hotel expect?
It varies a lot by location, reviews and how many repeat guests you have. The useful measure is whether your direct share grows month by month, not a fixed target.
Do I need a full website?
Not at first. A good booking page with photos and live prices, linked from Google, Instagram and WhatsApp, already captures many direct bookings.
